Proxama(AIM: PROX), which provides mobile commerce, loyalty and payment solutions, in conjunction with Paythru, a secure m-commerce payment and marketing platform, has delivered the first Near Field Communication (NFC) campaign for The Royal British Legion. As part of this year’s Poppy Appeal, collection tins and posters across Birmingham have been NFC enabled, with the public able to ‘tap the poppy’ to donate to the charity, creating a new, secure and easy method for donating.

Claire Rowcliffe, Midlands Regional Fundraising Manager for The Royal British Legion said: “It is great to be working with Proxama® and Paythru on the Poppy Appeal. Their support to The Royal British Legion is invaluable and will enable people to donate easily and directly with their smartphones. We’re hoping that this will make it easier for people to support The Royal British Legion on their way to and from work, adding to the success of the Poppy Day and Poppy Appeal.”

NFC is a contactless, wireless means of transferring information and money between two close devices, such as a smartphone and an NFC tag or an Oyster card and reader. It is activated when two antennae communicate with each other. QR codes will also be available for people with non-NFC enabled devices, ensuring everyone is able to donate to the Poppy Appeal through their smartphone.

The Poppy Appeal is the nation’s largest fundraising campaign in support of our Armed Forces. This year The Royal British Legion is aiming to raise £37 million during the Appeal. Every poppy helps support the British Armed Forces past and present, and their families, by contributing towards the £83 million needed by the Legion each year to deliver direct, practical care and support to the service community and to respond to over 170,000 calls a year for practical help.

Neil Garner, CEO & Founder, Proxama said, “NFC provides a new way for people to donate to important causes, such as the Poppy Appeal. With people on the move so much, carrying loose change isn’t something we all do. By enabling people to donate through their smartphones, which we rarely leave home without, it makes the process easier and more convenient, whilst benefiting important charities.”

Rupert Potter, Director of Strategy, Paythru said, “We’re delighted to be chosen to support The Royal British Legion in implementing “tap to donate”, an innovative new mobile donation concept. Paythru’s main objective was to offer a secure and agile payment platform, which will increase the number and size of donations, allow Royal British Legion to collect gift-aid on donations and to collect contact details for donors, all at this year’s Birmingham Poppy Appeal.”
