(RFIDWorld.ca) Allflex USA Inc. has expanded its business in animal identification tags after acquiring Destron Fearing Corporation which is the animal identification branch of Digital Angel Corporation. The buyout has cost the company $25 million in cash.

A leader in livestock identification and management tools, Allflex, has a product line containing visual identification products such as Tamperproof tags, global tag systems, as well as feedlot eartags. Their products also include electronic identification products such as radio-frequency identification (RFID), electronic identification (EID) systems, half and full duplex tags, electronic ID applicators and EID readers. The company also offers custom made identification products and has a line of syringes for livestock producers.

Destron Fearing’s products are used worldwide for pet identification, livestock identification, as well as for herd management. The type of readers used are patented implantable microchips, visual and RFID eartags. Many other readers are used for cattle, swine, horses and sheep.

Potential animal health applications are a new feature that will be included in Allflex’s product line. The implantable microchip used for the health applications, will have a temperature-sensing feature that will allow the reader to not only identify the animal but also read the animals body temperature. The benefit of being able to read real-time animal temperatures is that it can help diagnose early stages of disease so that effective treatment can be given.

After much consultation between the administration of Digital Angel and other related parties, it was decided that selling Destron Fearing was int he best interest of both Digital Angel’s stockholders as well as Destron Fearing’s employees to sell Destron Fearing. Selling the company gave stockholders, employees, partners and consumers the best opportunities.
